- Make a list.
Before you go shopping anywhere, make a list of the items that you need. Buy only what you have on your list. If you go shopping unprepared, you will likely buy things that you don't need.
- Track everything.
If you carry cash with you, carry a notebook or piece of paper and a pencil or pen as well. Every time you spend some cash, write down what you spent it on and where.
- Mandatory waiting period.
Say $100. Any purchases that will exceed that amount must have a waiting period of several days. Two to three days is optimal. This will help you to curb impulsive buying as well as give you time to assess whether you really need the item or not.
- Just say no.
Control your impulse spending. Take a list, and stick to it.
